About Hypnotherapy
Commonly Asked Questions:
WHAT IS HYPNOSIS?
Hypnosis is a powerful state of focused consciousness and awareness. It can be utilized to find and dissolve the underlying causes of many everyday issues that people deal with. It facilitates access to the healing resources inherent within the subconscious and unconscious mind, allowing for natural healing from within.
Hypnosis is used to help people discover the subconscious reasons for their symptoms, behaviors, or habits. When they are discovered, certain tools and techniques are used to help release them and relearn a new positive way of thinking, subconsciously. This process is called hypnotherapy.
Hypnosis has been sanctioned by the American Medical Association as well as many other organizations within the medical community since 1958, and has been proven to help patients overcome chronic pain, create anesthesia, and heal psychogenic illnesses.
HOW DOES HYPNOSIS WORK?
Hypnosis creates a high level of focused awareness, and simultaneously bypasses the analytical aspect of the mind overcoming what is called the critical factor. When we acquire new information, the mind runs everything through filters comparing the new data to what we already know, keeping what is useful and discarding what is not. This is a very important function of the mind when it comes to acquiring new skills, or even just sorting the massive amounts of data that we encounter throughout the day. Without this function, we would have to approach everything as if it were new information every time that we encountered it. There is a flaw however.
The problem is that often we take in inaccurate information, which then becomes a belief that acts as a filter for new information coming in. This is why changing habits by willpower alone is so difficult, we already have the subconscious and self defeating belief that we can not change, so considering making the change happen ( using willpower alone) becomes ineffective.
Hypnosis is powerful because with this focused awareness, the critical aspect of the mind can be bypassed, allowing for a bottom up rather than top down analysis of information to take place. New healthy and beneficial suggestions can be made directly to the subconscious, without the comparing mechanisms discarding these new beliefs. So the change we want to achieve in our life becomes accepted by the subconscious mind as true, and results then happen quickly, allowing for a whole new, and more accurate processing of information.
IS HYPNOSIS SAFE?
Hypnosis is absolutely safe - it's a perfectly natural state of mind that we go into naturally everyday. You enter hypnosis regularly when daydreaming, watching a good movie, or reading a book. Have you ever become choked up, or excited, or even scared during a movie or a book? Have you ever generated an emotion just by looking back on a memory? These are moments that you are consciously aware are not your current reality, and yet we can have a physical and emotional response due to our increased focus. That is hypnosis!
During these activities you remain consciously aware and in complete control, just as you do when a professional hypnotherapists assists you in entering into a state of hypnosis. Hypnosis is absolutely not mind control.
